It’s been two weeks since I last saw Nicolette. I watched her walk out of our room at the Bluemont Hotel and felt a strange sensation in the pit of my stomach. I kept expecting her to cave in and text me, but she didn’t. I must have started texting her a dozen times, but I’d stop in the middle of every single text and delete what I’d written. I told myself that I had to. If I caved first, I’d have to give up what I wanted, which was more than a hotel hook-up once or twice a week.

“I’m moving on.” I raise my glass to Cesare in cheers. “I’ve been stuck on this girl for far too long. She was just a hook-up, not my happily ever after.”

“You sound like a self-help book,” Cesare deadpans. “What other cliches can you come up with? There’s plenty of fish in the sea? It’s not who you meet; it’s when you meet?” He teases.

I gulp down half a pint of Big Wave, the draft on special today. “You sound pretty well-versed in self-help cliches, brother.”

Cesare snorts and rolls his eyes; he isn’t the type to get baited into arguments. “That’s hardly my fault. Kessa lives and breathes self-help books.”

I always forget that the reason my youngest brother isn’t in a relationship is because he’s been busy sabotaging the relationships of his best friend, Francesca Scot, for the last decade. “You know what’s unhealthy?” I lean toward him. “Chasing a girl that doesn’t want you.” It’s another attempt at baiting him, but Cesare doesn’t fall for it.

A cruel smile curls around his lips as he clenches his hands into fists. He takes a few deep breaths and any anger that he has drifts away like a receding tide. “Watch yourself, Stef. I love you, but I won’t hesitate to beat the shit out of you if you keep it up. I don’t care how heartbroken or drunk you are.”

I touched a nerve. “Awww, what a sweet sentiment.” I can feel the beer rushing to my head, but I settle down before I push him too far. “You do care about me.” The truth is I’ve always felt closer to Cesare than my other brothers. Cesare met Francesca in high school, and he instantly fell in love with her—the two dated for a year before having an amicable breakup despite my brother cheating on her. Francesca has been a part of his life ever since, though. She was young enough to realize that they weren’t meant to be together, and they remained friends. Of course, Cesare has been hopelessly in love with her ever since. His romantic side is one of the reasons we understand each other so well. I’ve always been a hopeless romantic at heart and he gets it.

Cesare is slowly sipping on a gin and tonic while I drown my sorrows in beer. “I care about you finding the person that makes you happy, Stefano. But that Calvino girl was never going to be it,” he explains as gently as he can.
